Collecting Music Boxes – A Popular Hobby

Almost everyone loves a music box. They have been available since the 1700s, although they were at first only in the homes of wealthy people or royalty. It was not until they were mass produced that they became affordable for the average family. Many people remember receiving their first music box, usually as a gift when they were children.

Collectible music boxes come in all shapes and sizes, from animal shapes to carousels and even musical jewelry boxes with a dancing ballerina inside. Most are wound by hand and usually play just one song, which plays more slowly as it winds down.

Music box collectors have many choices among traditional, antique or modern music boxes and from simple to elaborate. Antique boxes are those made before World War I, although traditional boxes have been made for many decades as well.

Porter, an American company in Randolph, Vermont has produced music boxes since 1974 and 750 have been made to date. They make only about 80 boxes each year and they quickly become collectibles.  The Regue music boxes are made by a Swiss company of wood with inlaid designs and range in price from around $21 to $70,000. They also make baby animal music boxes that play up to 18 notes. German music boxes also run from many interesting styles to plain boxes for storing small items.

No matter what your taste or style, there are collectible music boxes to choose from and always one more to add to the collection.  Anyone who wants to begin collecting for the first time should start by becoming educated on the subject. There are lots of books and videos on the subject available and a brief search on the Internet will result in free newsletters to sign up for or download. Seek out a reputable dealer, ask questions and look at a few items that interest you.
A dealer will not mind adding to your education if he or she knows you may become a valued customer. Of course, music boxes can be found on the Internet in auctions and sales on places like eBay or Craigslist but proceed with caution unless you are very sure of what you are buying.

Check out yard sales and flea markets as there are still many bargains available from private sellers. Ask family and friends if they have any collectible music boxes they would be willing to sell or give to you. It will not be long until you have a fine collection to enjoy.
