Vintage Signs

Vintage signs have become quite popular over the last few years, probably due to the larger collector's market that has emerged from the increase of related web sites and some popular TV shows like Pickers. Vintage signs can all shapes and sizes, and there are so many different ones you can’t count them.

Finding the right vintage signs for a collection can actually be quite difficult, but there are fortunately a few rules that even novice collectors can follow to make sure that they find the right items.

First and foremost, the age and notability of the company being advertised is always important. Older signs advertising the goods of a currently popular brand can be quite valuable, as can those signs that advertise companies that were popular in the past. The brand being advertised doesn’t necessarily have to be some nationally known product or business. It can be a regional product or company. It all depends on where you live as to how important that type of sign is.
It is important to note that the condition of these signs is as important as the company which is advertised. A good collectible sign can, and often should, have some wear and tear, but the company or product advertised should still be legible. A bit of visible age can actually add quite a bit of value to the item, especially if the potential buyer or collector is looking to add a bit of a retro feel to a display.

If you are looking to collect vintage signs, you should have the opportunity to search in many areas. Flea markets and garage sales are often common places to find such items, as are antique stores and estate sales. The internet is, of course, invaluable in the search for specific items, but it is a bit more difficult to find an unknown treasure on most auction sites. Keep the realistic value of these signs in mind when you make a purchase, and you should be able to create a collection of which you can be proud.

A Quick Guide to Depression Glass

Depression Glass gets its name from the era it was produced, namely the Depression Era. They are easily identified by its bright colors and imperfections. Although production of this type of glassware has long been halted, you can still easily find pieces being sold in various shops and fairs. A growing number of avid collectors are also joining the hunt for the rarest pieces. Whether purchasing the glassware as part of a collection or for regular home use, you will need to know the signs of what distinguishes Depression-era glass from other types of glassware.

There are varying interpretations as to the origins of the glassware’s name. Although it gained its popularity during time of the Great Depression, a number of manufacturers started producing Depression Glass during the mid 1920s and continued doing so until the 1940s. Some associate the name from the form and design of the glassware which included depressed areas. Regardless of the origins of the name, this type of glassware is easily identified for its varying colors. You can find Depression Glass in green, blue, pink, red, yellow, black and white. There were also manufacturers that produced clear glassware.

Elegant era glass was also produced and became popular. What distinguishes one from the other is the quality of the workmanship. In many pieces of depression glass you can find some form of flaw such as marks, dents, bubbles or other types of imperfections. Designs can vary to suit different tastes and preferences including birds, swirls and flowers. You can also find designs for particular occasions such as cupids to commemorate Valentine’s Day among others.

During those days, Depression Glass was cheap and readily available in dime stores. Some even use them as giveaways. Movie theatres, banks, gasoline stations and other types of stores give them to loyal patrons or as a freebie when availing of certain products or services. A number of magazines also use the same marketing ploy to get people to subscribe. During that time, you can even find them stashed in boxes of food to entice people to buy the brand.

If you're looking to buy Depression Glass for your home or collection, one of the key features is finding the imperfection. However, imperfections may decrease the value of the piece significantly. You should begin by finding a brand or pattern that you like and go from there.  Familiarize yourself with the different markings.   Look your purchase over very carefully.  There are lots of very good reproductions out there and if you get one of those your dish may not be worth the price.
